Modern Foreign Languages
KS2
In Years 5 and 6 we consolidate previous learning from Primary schools. Most
children now come to HCMS with one or two years of French, so we build on the
foundations taught previously.
In KS2 we follow the KS2 MFL Framework which comprises:
Oracy (Speaking and Listening)
Literacy (Reading and Writing)
Knowledge about Language (Grammar)
Language Learning Strategies (How we learn new language)
Intercultual Understanding (Knowledge about other cultures)
Although we primarily learn French at HCMS, other languages and cultures may
also be studied as part of the KS2 Framework for MFL, as it encourages children
to become language learners, rather than students of French.
KS3
KS3 follows the Years 7 and 8 MFL Programme of Study and consolidates the KS2 Framework.
The KS3 Programme of Study comprises:
4 Key Concepts
Linguistic Competence (Listening, Speaking, Reading, Writing)
Knowledge About Language
Creativity
Intercultural Understanding
2 Key Processes
Developing Language-learning strategies
Developing Language skills
In Year 8 there is a chance to try out French skills in real situations on the trip to France.
